Yes, the official account is a myth. The question why the media did not expose the myth and how the US could obtain the approval of NATO for the war against Afghanistan (the UN did not explicitely approve the war but condoned it), is very complex. Various authors have attempted to shed light on this question. A number of concepts have been invoked in this respect, such as denial, «willful blindness», and «group mind». Two important facts must be borne in mind: The events of 9/11 were designed to become dramatic media events. From the first moment, media were fed with insinuations about the responsibilty of Osama bin Laden and discoveries of items pointing to that direction, such as a Qur'an in an abandoned rental car, flight manuals in Arabic and a will in Arabic.
The propaganda machine worked day and night from the first moment to exclude any other perspective of the events. Facts that might have undermined the official story were not allowed to blur the clear image people had.

At the decision centers, such a policy was certainly willful. Most media were, however, only relays to the few main news agencies. Their complicity in maintaining the official story was not intentional, at least not shortly after 9/11. The other fact is Western journalists had no difficulty in believing that Osama bin Laden and Arabs would commit the 9/11 atrocities. Belief in alleged Arab/Muslim violence has been part and parcel of Western culture for decades.

Journalists did not find it necessary to ask questions about the evidence. Unsubstantiated and unattributed reports emanating from US intelligence and law-enforcement were published as truths. Both facts contributed to the creation and consolidation of the 9/11 myth.

Later, when contrary information was discovered, it became difficult for those who had already committed themselves in writing to the official story and actually served as powerful relays for that story, to back down and admit that they had been deceived and deceiving. It requires substantial courage to admit having misled a whole population, even if such deception can be attributed to external causes. To this psychological factor must be added the group-psychology which developed after 9/11, which made it difficult for any person to stand up, rather lonely, and challenge the official view. Finally, journalists would speedily find that straying from the official line might hurt their career or even risk their jobs.

This happened even to tenured professors.


Nu vågar jag ej citera mer - men det är i sin helhet en mycket läsvärd intervju. Det som kort sagt kan sägas är att media, som i nästan alla stater, har uppfattat sin roll som stödjande till status quo. Om status quo därför är att ett gigantiskt massmord ej får avslöjas, då avslöjar inte media ett gigantiskt massmord. Särskilt inte som media - genom oaktsamhet eller naivitet - gjort sig delaktiga genom att skydda brottsningarna. Vilket man senare inte kan erkänna.


Jag lyssnade på Robert Fisk, en journalist med 30 års erfarenhet av mellanösternrapportering, i Stockholm i maj 2007 (2007-05-10, ABF Stockholm, Katasalen) när han presenterade sin stora bok med det orwellska namnet "Det stora kriget för mänskligheten: Kampen om Mellanöstern" (Norstedts, april 2007). Han kommenterade bl.a. "Everybody I meet thinks they are taking part in wars for civilization, and it is all rubbish." Alltså att alla han träffar tror att de deltar i krig för civilisation, och alltihop är skitsnack. I detta samtal mellan Fisk och några svenskar säger han, min transkribering från egen inspelning, "I think there is a kind of - you know, we have some dream bubble, in which a narrative is set up by our presidents and our prime ministers and our generals and our journalists of course.

War on Terror. Good and Evil. Them and Us. It's the same language that Bush speaks that Usama bin-Laden speaks, by the way. You can interpose them on quite some fun videotapes if you want. And I think that along with the mouse-like obedience of particularly American journalists, they get away with it. Oh, War on Terror, More Terror, More Terror! Be Frightened! Have more security. Have more guns. More strictures on air-planes. Take away the knives you eat with! Take away the tooth-paste." Det han säger, med 30 års yrkeserfarenhet i ryggen, är alltså att vi lever i en dröm-bubbla skapad av våra ledares och medias berättelser, och att de lyckas med detta p.g.a. musliknade lydighet hos f.f.a. [nord-]amerikanska journalister.

Nu menar Fisk visserligen att Bush & Blair är för klantiga för att kunna ha genomfört "911", men han bortser då från att de kanske inte har så mycket kontroll över utvecklingen som vi gärna inbillar oss.

Oavsett hur det är med det så kan man undra över hur svenska medier ser på sin roll när de konsekvent sorterar bort ståndpunkter som inte stämmer med deras egna skygglappar. Är det av någon slags missriktad omsorg om mediekonsumenterna, för att vi inte ska behöva utsättas för förvirring? D.v.s., tror journalister att deras roll är att bekräfta sina egna och läsarnas förutfattade meningar?


Jag tror vi behöver en ny slags media. Att vi behöver media som inte i första hand försöker bekräfta fördomar, utan som istället försöker ifrågasätta. De konsumenter som faktiskt VILL få sina fördomar bekräftade kan då hänvisas till särskilda ÅSIKTS-media, medan resten av oss kan ta del av NYHETS-media. Särskilt offentligt finansierade medier ska ej syssla med ÅSIKTS-spridning.

Det pågår ett krig mot förnuftet, de kallar det kriget mot terrorismen, men det ÄR kriget mot förnuftet, och vi behöver medier som hjälper oss se att "världen är upp och ned", och rädda förnuftet. Inte medier som är en del av detta krig.
